Stability in the Kashmir Region
Hello delegates,
For this week's blog post, I thought I would highlight the current situation along the Kashmiri Line of Control (LoC). As you all know, there has been an official ceasefire along the line of control for decades. However, there are routinely breaches of that ceasefire; in 2017 there were 971 cross-border firing events. In 2018, that number more than doubled, with 2140 official firing events. I've attached an article that goes into more details on these events, as well as briefly talks about the Indian government's response to the situation.

The current developments in Kashmir are making violations of the LoC even more concerning, with the recent bombing near Srinagar and India stating that it may violate the Indus Waters Treaty. I hope that in committee we can address the escalating political tensions between India and Pakistan, because the events as of late could trigger an Indian response similar to what occurred in 2016 after the killing of Burhan Wani.
