Treaty Fallout and Hypersonic Missiles

Hey everyone! Here is a relatively recent (and very short!) article about the collapse of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, as both Putin and Trump have withdrawn. Additionally, the article describes how Russia intends to develop a hypersonic missile (which the US and China are working on as well).

  1. Although it's a short article, it brings up troubling new missile developments and forebodes an escalation of tensions between the US and Russia. The development of hypersonic missiles seems to be an extension of the arms race in the Cold War, when missile development focused on increasingly shorter flight times to strike command centers before MAD could be initiated. I suppose this means that the US will have to continue relying on "left of launch" tactics in order to prevent attacks not only from the DPRK but from hypersonic Russian missiles.

Thank you for sharing! Very interesting developments are definitely on the rise.

  2. Hypersonic missiles pose a greater threat than almost any other missile has. Traveling 5 times the speed of sound, a hyper sonic missile can circumnavigate the planet in a shorter time than my schools bus ride up to the conference. The threat of hypersonic missiles is one that needs to be considered because once one is launched, there is no way to stop it, as stated in the article.

As stated above, the show the need for left of launch tactics. It is impossible to stop these missiles so we must destroy them before they even leave the launch pad. But breaking into the supply chains or cyber networks of Russia is much harder than that of Iran or DPRK. This posses an interesting threat.

Thank you for the interesting article.
