North Korean Missile Program -- US Options

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/04/world/asia/north-korea-missile-program-sabotage.html Hello delegates! I know you all have a lot on your to-do list, but if you want to be productive while simultaneously reading a really interesting article, check this one out! It details the Obama and Trump administrations and the options both have considered in dealing with the North Korean missile threat. The author discusses these options and their shortcomings, the overarching history, and background. So if you're curious, read on to the end of the article. I have been a delegate before and remember the tedious task of research, so I will try to link articles that I find useful, entertaining, and refreshing on this blog. Good luck!

Views on Kashmir

For this week's blog post, I thought it would be interesting to look at one recent event related to Kashmir, and how differently two groups view that same issue. The event in question is a phone call on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 between the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and Kashmiri separatist leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. In this phone call, the foreign minister told Farooq that Pakistan would hold Kashmir Day on February 5 in order to protest human rights violations in Kashmir by the Indian government. The first source, Greater Kashmir, is an English language newspaper published in Srinagar, the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Reading the article about this phone call, it is immediately obvious of the bias of this source. A majority of the article is devoted to quotes from Farooq, with no reporting about the Indian response or view about this matter. The second source, India Today, at first glance seems relatively neutral about this inci

A Note on Position Papers and the THIMUN Guide!

Hi delegates! I've been receiving a lot of emails regarding position paper guidelines for NATO this year, and whether or not we expect delegates to follow some special format. If you were wrongly informed about this, I'm very sorry for all the confusion! To clarify: NATO will NOT  be following any special guidelines for the position papers. Please format your papers according to the general guidelines available to you on the BMUN website. For your convenience,  here  is the link to the position paper guidelines as they appear on our committee's page . In terms of our procedure for this committee, all of you should know by now that we are going to be following THIMUN procedure at NATO, and additionally, THIMUN Security Council procedure. I've also been receiving lots of emails about where you can find the procedure guide for THIMUN. It is now linked on our committee's page on the BMUN website! For your convenience, I've also linked it  here . Please read th
Hello everyone! My name is Emad Siddiq and I am a sophomore here at UC Berkeley intending to major in Computer Science and Economics. I was born in Saudi Arabia but grew up in Islamabad, Pakistan. I grew up speaking three languages (Pashto, Urdu and English) and can speak some Italian. I passionately follow Pakistani politics, play the Rabab (listen to it on youtube!) and love Sufi poetry and qawallis. MUN has been an active part for nearly eight years now and I am very enthusiastic about the topics the Chairs have chosen this year. I am also awful at introducing myself but I look forward to meeting you all and hope for a memorable conference!
Hey everyone! My name is AD Mohanraj and I'm currently a junior at UC Berkeley majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. This is my second year of chairing conferences, I also did MUN as a delegate for two years in high school. Last year at at BMUN 66, I chaired the Joint Crisis Committee simulating US-China relations. At the end of January 2019, I'll also be chairing the World Bank at SCVMUN. In my free time, I enjoy working on programming projects and playing soccer. Last fall, I participated in a study abroad program in Sweden, where I took Computer Science courses at Lund University. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in March!
Hello! My name is Danielle Tyukody and I am very excited to be one of your vice chairs for NATO this year! I am a sophomore at UC Berkeley majoring in political science with a specialization in comparative politics, and minoring in education. I have been a part of BMUN for the past two years, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Outside of BMUN, I am an avid rock climber, and enjoy leading the competitive team for Cal Climbing here at Berkeley. This summer, I got my Nitrox Diving Certification in the Cayman Islands, and completed an online class. I wish you all the best, and cannot wait to see everyone in March. Good luck!

Welcome Delegates! - Suma Thati

Hi delegates! Welcome to the NATO committee blog! My name is Suma Thati, and I have the honor of serving as your head chair for NATO at BMUN 67. I'm accompanied by three incredible vice chairs: AD Mohanraj, Danielle Tyukody, and Emad Siddiq. We are so incredibly excited to meet all of you in March! I wanted to use this opportunity to introduce myself, our committee and the purpose of this blog to all of you. I'm currently a junior at UC Berkeley majoring in Media Studies. This is my third year in BMUN, but my ninth year doing Model United Nations overall. I've been involved in MUN since I was 12 years old, and BMUN 67 will be my 18th conference! As you can tell, I pretty much became obsessed with MUN from the moment I made my first speech, and it has quickly become one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I hope that through BMUN, you will take away as much from it as I did. I was born in India, but I moved around a lot throughout the course of my life, livin
